The highest waterfall in England.
The Tees plunges 70 feet from a rock-strewn plateau to a deep pool. The area is well wooded and can be reached on either side of the river. A quick and easy visit entails parking at the car park at Forest-in-Teesdale, by the High Force Hotel.
A charge is made for parking here but there is no alternative unless you have a drink in the hotel and sneak off afterwards!
As the path on this side is part of the Raby Estates, a charge is requested before proceeding on foot down their immaculate tarmac highway. An alternative (and cheaper) route from the car park is to head down a path which begins around 50 yds south of the obvious one.
Follow the river bank south for about half a mile, then cross the footbridge and retrace your steps on the other side of the river. This is the Pennine Way and climbs gently up to High Force. Once you get a glimpse of the waterfall there are various paths that give a good view like the picture opposite. If children are in the party, caution is recommended near the edge.
