The village of Mickleton is situated high on the south side of the dale and has superb views in all directions. Facilities in the village include a Post Office and store, which is adequate for basic provisions such as bread, milk and newspapers.

There are two pubs serving excellent beer and food at very reasonable prices. The recently built village hall often has a variety of entertainment and local events. There is also a garage which serves petrol and can be useful if you have problems with your car.

Blackthorn Cottage is found in Low Side, Mickleton, which is a quiet lane off the main road. It is not unusual to see horses and cows in the lane, so traffic is very light.

A short walk from the village centre brings you to the picnic site on the Teesdale Railway Trail. The disused railway's trackbed has been turned into a long distance path which connects to the Pennine Way at Middleton-in-Teesdale. Walking south-east will get you to Romaldkirk via this route.
