Blackthorn Cottage

Mickleton, Teesdale, County Durham, England
Self Catering - Sleeps 4-6

Blackthorn Cottage dates back to 1756 and is typical of the farm workers cottages in Teesdale at the time, with its thick stone walls and stone 'slates' on the roof. The cottage is English Tourism Council inspected and has been awarded a 3 star rating. Inside the spacious lounge has an original stone fireplace which will burn coal and logs, and the ceiling has exposed beams. We believe the main interior doors are the original pine planked type with cast iron fittings. The large main bedroom has a double bed. A rear extension was added some years back, benefitting the cottage with a purposeful kitchen-diner downstairs and a further bedroom and bathroom above. The back bedroom is compact with twin single beds. Additional sleeping accomodation can be managed by using the double bed-settee in the lounge, plus there is a travel cot for babies.

The lounge has a colour TV, VCR, Stereo radio/hi-fi, and various books, games etc. In the well equipped kitchen-diner is an electric cooker, fridge, microwave etc.
Upstairs is a fully fitted modern bathroom with separate shower.
The River Tees can be seen from the bath (this must be a first!), and the scenery surrounding the village is superb. We recently altered the bathroom to include a separate shower cubicle with electric shower. As there is no gas in the village, cooking, lighting and heating is all electric. Electricity is included in the hire costs. We have a 'no pets' policy and prefer non-smokers.
